By means of co-incineration of sewage sludge in an power plant already existing with constant emission values we protect both environment and health effectively. The organic substances, similar to hormones, contained in the sewage sludge (residues from drugs, plant protection products and plasticizers) and harmful heavy metals do not get back into our food.





The modern plant of “VERBUND ATP”, Austrian Thermal Power, produces electric current but mainly heat for the district heat network of Graz. The substitution of fossil fuels (coal) by sewage sludge results in the innovative energy efficiency at the integrated power-heat-coupling in the ATP plant – a fuel utilization degree of 66% can be achieved. The additional use of residues from the combustion (coarse and flue ash) in the cement and building industry supersedes the use of expensive and valuable raw material.

This guarantees the optimal raw material cycle as well as energy cycle of the sewage sludge – from the citizen to the sewage plant and back to the citizen as energy.



Sewage sludge reduces harmful substances in the waste water. Currently, the main part of sewage is used in agriculture and landscaping. Heavy metals and organic substances, similar to hormones, find their way back into the food chain at the end. Due to the energetic utilization or the thermal recycling of sewage sludge, the protection of soil, environment and last, but not least ourselves can be guaranteed. We contribute to the protection of agricultural areas, to the reduction of fossil fuels and emissions.



By using the existing industrial plant less investment costs are incurred than by the construction of a mono incineration plant. Without further treatment, the sewage sludge is transported directly to the high-tech plant of “ATP” in Mellach. The sewage sludge is added to the coal in the existing coal pulverizer and together with the coal, the finely ground sewage sludge is incinerated. Worth mentionable is that the sewage sludge is already dried with the waste heat in the coal pulverizer. The product that means the powder consists of 3% sewage sludge. The residues serve as raw material for the cement- and building industry. Moreover, the emission values remain the same.
