Don’t let food go to waste
Targets
"Enjoyment without leftovers" ("Restlos Genießen") is aiming at a more conscious use of food – i.e. to refrain from throwing out left-over food. Furthermore, this initiative also is to encourage a more conscious use of any raw materials: as this not only treats the environment, but also the household budget with care.
Don’t let food go to waste!
Every year, households in Austria throw out up to 166,000 tons of food. The author of a study of the Institute of Waste Management of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences in Vienna, Felicitas Schneider, replied to the question as to what can be found in our refuse: "We find practically everything the range of products has to offer in our refuse. Fruits and vegetables, dairy products, bread and pastry, meat, convenience food – everything you can imagine. And there are products from the relatively cheap bulk pack right up to originally vacuum-packaged bio meat from farm shops. Even homemade jam." Within the scope of this study it was found out, that in the households, 6 – 12 % of the residual waste consists of food. This corresponds to a quantity of 10 to 20 kg per year. Plus there still is the portion of leftovers in the residual waste on top of that.
